I highly recommend "The Founder", a movie about the man that put McDonald's on the map. Not normally my cup 'o tea, but one of the best movies I've seen all year.

I've watched "Shimmer lake" on the Netflix last night. Not too bad and reminded me some of the Coen's movies..

if you have Amazon Prime, check out Gleason. it's the story of a former New Orleans Saints player who developed ALS. it's a video diary to his yet-to-be born son as he battles the illness.

it's a whirlwind of emotions! worth watching though.

Just watched "Golden Kingdom" on the Netflix the other night. Beautiful, simple, somewhat meditative Buddhist movie.

Recently my wife and I worked our way through the first season of Fargo on Netflix. We normally don't do much in the way of TV series, but we'd heard some many people raving about this one that we came off the bench. We both found it superbly acted and filmed, and it's basically entertaining at the level of plot. However, we found it to be a thematic mess. It's full of academic philosophy references (e.g., the episode titles "Buridan's Ass", "Who Shaves the Barber", "The Heap", etc.) and biblical and literary allusions and imagery, but all of that seems to be episodic -- it doesn't add up to anything coherent. It all got kitchy for me. While watching the series I had the feeling of talking to some wanna-be intellectual at a party who is dropping book titles he doesn't really understand. Sure, the theme of the intrinsic evil of human nature vs. the possibility of real charity is developed in some detail throughout, but that's been done much better, ad nauseam. The film Fargo (along with much of what the Coen brothers have done) is brilliant in that way. I didn't need to sit through 12 hours of nihilistic violence to see that again. Anyway, that's my take.

We also watched Split last weekend. The wife and I are both huge fan's of Shyamalan's early films, but we checked out after The Lady in the Water. Split, however, we thought was solid. He's returned to the earlier themes. The film raises some novel issues. It has the classic Shyamalan twists, and it manages to scare a bit too. Shyamalan has a knack for locating the origins of myth and more generally religious aspiration within the human psyche without at the same time demystifying the world.

Okay, so I just saw Locke with Tom Hardy. Now I'm a big Hardy fan, but this movie was the stupidest thing I've seen (posing as "art") and not anything close to being as advertised ("chilling" "nerve wracking" "Hitchcock-ian").

The crazy thing is it had a 90 something RT score and rave reviews. Emperor's new clothes in my opinion...anyone else see it? What'd ya think? I'm stunned by the reviews this thing got!
