There's an interesting writeup on r/bodyweightfitness regarding the relationship between the bench press 1RM and the number of pushups a trainee can do. The author references a couple of scientific studies, finding that increases in 1RM bench press directly correlated with an increase in max pushup numbers.

Apparently, point of diminishing returns for max pushup gains is around 1.3x bodyweight 1RM on the bench press.
I know KB talks about this in the books, but is nice
to have peer review sources to point to, especially for anyone dealing with the conventional wisdom that "the best way to do more pushups is to do more pushups."
