Hi guys,
I might be getting into 1 week of Medium-Hard hiking for about 5-8hrs/day. That means 1 week of E. I am thinking of the best way to incorporate it into the programming and I want to ask for your opinion.
I am thinking of following options.
Option#1
- Black OPI/A with moderate HICs, no E.
- week of E
- Black OPI/A with moderate HICs, no E.
Option#2
- Black OPI/A without any conditioning.
- week of E
- Black OPI/A with moderate HICs, no E.
Option#3
- Black OPI/A with moderate HICs, no E.
- week of E
- week off
- Black OPI/A with moderate HICs, no E.
What do you guys think?

Where are you going hiking?
I don't know about your programming questions, but after a hard backpacking trip that jacks up my knees, I like a week of recovery where the running is flat and the stairs are minimum. A lighter 5x5 squat workout also helps get the blood flowing and the healing process moving for me.

It depends on some family situations now.. I will follow the orders (aka go with the flow)

So, basically, you are having your block done but taking it easy.. I see. Thank you.

I'd go with option #1 because you can stay active (take it easy), then have your hike, and use the third week of HICs as an active recovery.

Thank you. How do you mean 3rd week? I am thinking of doing whole blocks of blacks and squeezing hikes in between..

Bark, if it is just for one week, why not make it a deload week for strength? Just enjoy the hiking. Plus who knows what else will come up before and after the hike.

Agreed with the above. Training shouldn't interfere with life. Just do it and roll with it... And look at the hiking as a badass training session every day.
Have fun brother!

I would probably go with option 1. If you think the hiking is going to be easy and you want to challenge yourself, throw some extra weight in a pack. Maybe bring a kettlebell as the extra weight and hit some quick workouts, if you feel you need it. I've been training for a backcountry hunt for a few months and I went out there to scout last month. Everyday out there I was hiking with a lot of weight. So the two weeks before and after I just hit my OP I/A sessions and S&S back to back. I think it worked out perfectly as I felt refreshed on both ends of the spectrum. I wouldn't worry too much about losing strength gains if you are hiking with weight. I always feel stronger after a long week in the field with a heavy ruck attached to my back. Good luck and enjoy the outdoors and family time
