I stumbled across the Tacticall Barbell website when researching training programs for a Tough Mudder I signed up for in early Jan. It seemed to be exactly what I was looking for in terms of all-around fitness with measured progressions, so after some more reading on the TM website and on Reddit I jumped in and purchased TB1&2.
After reading both books I started my Base Building block on January 23rd, which I just finished last week. I'll be running a 6 week block of Fighter/Black leading into my Tough Mudder and will then be jumping into my full continuation phase of Black + Op Pro. Starting this training log for both tracking and accountability purposes.
Training Maxes
Squat - 385
Bench - 250
WPU - 250
DL - 405
1 mile - 8:30
5k - 27min
10k - 65min (completed during BB phase, see below)
Long-Term Goals
Squat - 455
Bench - 315
WPU - 315
DL - 495
1 mile - sub 7min
5k - sub 24min
10k - sub 55min
Base Building Review
This was easily the most productive endurance training plan I've ever attempted. As someone who has never run more than a 5k prior to this program, I was (relatively ) easily running 4-5 miles on my E days and finished the block with a 65min 10k on the final Saturday E session. I come to really enjoy to long Saturday E sessions, which plays into my decision to eventually continue with Black Professional protocol. All that said, I could not have been more pleased with my results from the BB block.
Strength Plan
6 weeks of Fighter + Black as a lead in to the Tough Mudder. I decided on the Fighter + Black protocol as I'm planning on running a weekly schedule similar to the below as prep for the TM. My strength cluster will be Squat, Bench, WPU and Deadlift . Any input/advice would be much appreciated.
M - Strength
T - HIC
W - 30-45min FunRun
Th - Strength
F - HIC
Sa - Long E session
Su - Rest
After this short block of Fighter, I will fully transition into the Operator + Black Pro template and run that for a few blocks before reassessing goals and progress.
Conditioning Plan
During this short phase of Fighter I am planning on running with a Black protocol consisiting of 2 HIC's and 2-3 E sessions per week. The HIC's will consist primarily of Hills, 600m resets, Fast 5 and Fobbit Intervals. The E sessions will consist of one FunRun per week and 1 long 60+ minute LSS session. If I decide to add in the 3rd E session it will be a short 30min LSS Run.
Afterwards I will move into the OP/Black Pro phase and will determine conditioning goals at that time. Will likely consist of many of the same conditioning workouts as running is my conditioning method of choice.
