RobB's Training Log

Post by RobB »

I'm 35 yo, 205lbs, 6'2". I spent most of my 20's training like a powerlifter, got fat (biggest was 245lbs), got injured, got married, and cut back on the intensity. While my wife was pregnant with our first child, I started training BJJ. At first it was a couple of foundational classes a week and over time I've worked up to training BJJ 8-10 hours a week, I've been training for 6 years. I normally get 4-6 6 minute rounds in at the end of class. I had a competition for the first time in six months last weekend and gassed out about halfway through my fifth match. I have no delusions of being a world champion, I just want to keep getting better.

I started Base Building this week. I tried it last winter, but eventually the cold weather made it impossible to continue running and I called it quits. I've been doing Operator since then. I would say I'm occasionally running, but I don't think less than once a month is occasional.

I figured if I started logging online, it would keep me accountable. My schedule is kind of in disarray, my oldest two kids started school back up this week and our childcare for our youngest on vacation next week.

LSS - Running - I've never liked running, but it's starting to grow on me.
SE - Barbell - 65lbs - Push Press, Front Squat, Row, Bench, Shrug, Romanian Deadlift

Monday 8/14 - BJJ - 2 hours including 4x6 minute rounds, PM 30 minutes of yoga
Tuesday 8/15 - SE 3x20
Wednesday 8/16 - AM BJJ - 2 hours including 5x6 minute rounds, PM LSS run - 30 minutes - 2.76 miles
Thursday 8/17 - AM LSS run - 30 minutes - 3.11 miles, PM 40 minutes of yoga

I've thought about yoga for a while, but never took the plunge. What's your experience been? Seems like you incorporate it a fair amount.

I started doing yoga when I was recovering from a knee injury and was looking for something low impact to get myself going again. It feels good, most of the movements are the reverse of what happens in BJJ. I'm also not the best at just stretching and flexibility is not one of my strong suits. I don't do anything crazy with it, there's still room for a lot more improvement. I just find videos online and do them at home. I tend to go for vinyasa flow style. I might not always like it while I'm doing it, but I definitely feel better afterwards.

Tuesday 8/29 - SE 3x40
Wednesday 8/30 - LSS Run 50 minutes/4.37 miles
Thursday 8/31 - SE 2x40
Friday 9/1 - Rest day

This week has been another unusual week, my BJJ gym is changing locations so classes have been suspended. I've been going every morning to contribute free labor and try to speed up the process, it should be ready tomorrow. My oldest stayed home with me today because he was sick. Hopefully after labor day things return to normal.
