Pull ups and BB

Post by RugbyGuy »

Wasn't sure if I should have posted this in strength or not, but it's too late now I guess. I'm in week 2 of BB, my SE cluster is a Barbell cluster with push ups. I'm in the Marine Corps and need to work on my pull ups, but lord knows I would be there all damn day trying to get through 3 sets of 30, 40 or 50. Right now I'm at about 15 or so in a max set. Can I run something like Armstrong alongside basebuilding, or any other pull up program/progression you guys would recommend? I've not been very consistent in the past (story of my life) but I'm trying to change that now. New PFT has a max score at 23 pull ups and I'm afraid if I don't do any pull ups until after BB, I won't have the time to get my numbers up before PFT season.

My last run with BB I had a similar issue, so all I did was follow the alpha pattern for the pull-ups, kept the rest of the cluster as per bravo. 10,20, 30. Worked like a charm and I had a nice little increase.

I'm in the Corps too. I added pullups in my cluster and it sucks. Sucks a lot when you get to 3x30 with pullups and onward. I don't know if I would do it again this way but Armstrong or Fighter Pullups might be a better option in addition to your SE cluster. I guess 5 days pullups with basebuilding. I haven't maxed out in a bit but I'm sure I've gone up.

Do pull ups on your E/HIC days before and avoid upper body pulls for clusters.
