Zulu I/A: lost article

Post by Barkadion »

I have been reading TB Reddit lately and I found very interesting post about Zulu I/A similar to OP I/A-3. The post has link to the article that seems to be missing (lost) from the TB site. But post has the whole article (looks like it).

I am just curious if it is still legit. Here is the link to reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tacticalbarbel ... _template/

Here is the template from the article:

Day 1 – A
Day 2 – Conditioning or Off
Day 3 - B
Day 4 – Conditioning or Off
Day 5 – A
Day 6 – Conditioning or Off
Day 7 – B
Day 8 – Conditioning or Off
Day 9 – Cycle 2 begins – A

Like Operator I/A, this is a perpetual template, not bound within a 7 day week. Follow the percentages as per your Zulu template, and force progression or retest after a set number of cycles. Minimum 1 rest day within a 7 day period. Minimum. More is not always better. Take a week of rest roughly every 6-12 weeks or as you need it. Can be used with either Black or Green protocol.

Benefits:
- Allows for more volume/more sets on your lifting days
- Spaces apart lifting sessions for better recovery
- Breaks up training by alternating between strength and conditioning
- Flexible in terms of programming. You can add in a post-Zulu conditioning session if more training’s required.
- Because you can add HIC or LSS after Zulu sessions as well as on conditioning days, you can manipulate your schedule for more or less rest - days.
- If you use this approach, you can increase the number of sets - do up to 10. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. If you’re new to combining strength training and conditioning, start with the minimum and build volume up slowly over time.

My Questions:
1. Is the still legit TB template?
2. Has anyone done that?
3. Can it be run with OP I/A percentages?
4. Can it be run with 11 days week with having more days off? Something like:
A/HIC/Rest/B/HIC/Rest - Repeat?

Thanks!!!

Thanks Bark. Never tried Zulu but I can see where it can have benefits to training

I had to go back and look over the Zulu chapter again before I could give you an honest opinion on this

Straight from the book, looks like the only difference between Zulu and Zulu I/A more flexibility on sets and higher percentages on I/A. So in the article it talks about possibly training 10 working sets, but doesn’t say anything about that in the book. Says to use the extra time you have for accessory work and/or conditioning. I’ve never trained more than five working sets for one lift in a training session. I think 10 is overkill. I just finished six months of Op I/A using the minimum of three working sets on each lift. Re tested my max on all of them the other week and crushed my PRs. I believe the trick is just consistency, greasing the groove 75-90%

I do like the idea of the Zulu templates and I can see how it could work well for me. Even now I am thinking about trying it instead of my go to Fighter I/A. Early mornings are my lifting time. Nights are conditioning/BJJ. It would just mean more 2x/days. Now what I would do with the extra time? Not sure, I’m not big on accessory work anymore. Few things here and there, but usually do them on my S&S day. I also don’t like combining my MS session with conditioning. Feels like crossfit

The percentages are basically the same as Op I/A. In the book it doesn’t say anything about either template being perpetual, unless I’m missing it. If that’s what you’re asking. But I’m sure you could tweak it

Again, if I was using this template I would take advantage of the short training sessions in the AM to get multiple 2x/days

All good points. Thanks mate. I am with you on not liking lifting and conditioning on the same day. But I am thinking if I can change my attitude to allow more flexibility with the schedule. Still not sure, though.

I will still do both lifting and conditioning in the same day. Just not in the same session. I try to keep six hours between sessions on 2x/days. With strength always first

I might give Zulu I/A a try next block. Just to see how it goes. If I do, I will let you know what I think of it..

That’d be greatly appreciated!

I have one more block of OWT to run. And I’m thinking of what to do next. Lanmine press did a magic for my shoulder and I feel ready for floor press. Giving that I really like to keep both around. As well as some sort of rowing to compliment chins.

Sounds like Zulu would be perfect for you with all those accessory lifts. Glad the shoulder work is helping out
