Too funny. Me and J-Madd were discussing stoicism at length the day before this post. I've been hearing good things about 'Letters from a Stoic', which is now on my ever-lengthening reading list.

Good and Evil - Taylor (J-Madd recommendation)
Sit - Taisen Deshimaru.
For anyone remotely interested in Zen philosophy/meditation with a martial flavor I highly recommend reading his 'Zen Way to the Martial Arts' first. Ignore the cheese title, Deshimaru was a legitimate Zen master in the Soto tradition. Very simple and direct language. Here's a random example of a passage(paraphrased);
'A master told us three things were important (for the martial arts): mind/spirit, technique, body. Which is most important?'
Deshimaru: 'In the martial arts a thorough knowledge of wasa (technique) is useful. And in a young person the body (strength) is the fundamental element, whereas in an older man technique and spirit predominate. In reality, shin (spirit) is what matters first. Technique and body come afterward. In a fight between a strong technique and a strong body; technique will prevail. In a fight between a strong mind and a strong technique, mind will prevail because it will find the weak point.'

Years ago at a clinic, a young man told me, “Squats hurt my knees.”
I asked him to demonstrate for me, and after he did said bluntly,
“Squats don’t hurt your knees; what you are doing hurts your knees.”
