Kettlebell starter set ?

Post by Gerryatric »

Hi
How many kettlebells did. most of you guys start out with ? I am just at the start of base building and my gym has a good range of kettlebells up to 24 kg . I will be using KBS for apex hills and SE /GC ,so was thinking of a pair of 16s a 20 and 24
As always I would like the benefit of the huge level of experience on this forum
Cheers

I didn't see the need for an entire set when I started out, but it guess it depends on what you're planning to do. I started with a single 24kg, used it for a couple years and last year graduated to a 32kg. But then I use KBs mostly to supplement my training, I stick mostly to swings and snatches. I could see needing different sizes if you were going to mix it up, probably won't be able to TGU as much weight as you can swing for example.

If you go with Pavel's ETK, he recommends a 16, 24, 32 set (kg). If you're starting out on new movements, having one that's between 8-12kg can be helpful for technique work. In the super long run, a 48kg might merit consideration if you're looking into super-heavy swings.

Another option that is very interesting if you have:
1. Access to a range of dumbbells; and
2. Do not plan on doing C&Js and snatches

Is the Kettle Clamp (http://www.thekettleclamp.com/)

x2. I trained with just a 55lb KB for quite a while and then added a 70lb. That held me for about a year doing Pavel's ETK. If I were starting out right now, I would go with a 24KB/55lb KB and Simple and Sinister.

Double KB work gets technical pretty quick. If you are starting out I would go with 20 kg/24 kg single bells. You can always start scaling up your movements (i.e. progress to 1 arm swings then snatches etc).

~$20

Don't get me wrong, it's not as good as actual kettlebells. But for a guy that only uses them sparingly, it gets the job done.

I used Simple and Sinister, started out with a roommates 25lb DB, then bought a 55lb KB off of craigslist, then later transitioned to the 70lb KB then found TB. Every weight increase was done only after I was able to do 100 swings and 5 getups per side.

I own 2x adjustable 32kg Kettlebells and a single 16kg Kettlebell.

If I could justify it I would love a separate set of 16,24,32 kg, because changing them can get annoying mid workout.
Don't forgot you can do double 1 armed swings instead of buying a specialised bell like the 40-48kg ones.

2 x 24kg Bells are head than the single 48kg and you are already set.
